I am delighted to report that Confluence, where words & images, artists & writers, family & friends, press & (the) public met, on September 15th and then on to Thursday the 20th was a success.
All 250 brochures brought to the venue were, by the last day, taken. So, we can, I hope, safely assume that, over the course of the exhibition, at least 200 people visited us, were engaged, and pleased to have viewed an exhibition as unique as this one was. Thanks for the success of the exhibition go to Mr Akram Miknas, President of Promoseven Holdings, Mr Angus Campbell and the team at Harbour Gate for making it such a success. Thanks also to Chantilly Café Pâtisserie, Bahrain Art Magazine, Behbehani, and Art Hub Bahrain.
From September 16th to 20th lovers of the arts and words will have a unique opportunity to view a collection of canvases that include illustrations, photographs, paintings, sketches, and even an installation all connected to poems or writings that question or challenge, express an emotion, or amuse.
Come, explore the written word with an image that complements it. This is Confluence… And you are invited to visit us any time during the day at Harbour Gate on the second floor.

The Bahrain Writers’ Circle once had a delightful home where we held meetings, celebrations, two Colours of Life festivals on a rooftop venue specially set up for us! It was a place of memories and laughter, before or after-meeting dinner for some of us. For all this we would never find enough words to thank the owner of Umami, Momen Khandarkar and his able, dedicated and supportive team, Delwar, Suhail and the other lads. As things evolve, the venue, is now closed. There is hope, however, that Umami will be reincarnated. Until then we wait, suspended in hope.
Like many another chrysalis, we, the BWC have had to break out of our comfort zone, explore the world and learn to fly.
So as of this February, we are flitting to not one but three different locations!
Al Riwaq Art Space
Our monthly meeting to be held on Monday 12th February at 7:30pm will be at Al Riwaq Art Space in the American Space up on the third floor. What a beautiful location! Thank you to our member Jan Von Schleh for organizing such a charming spot. Jan is also our speaker for the evening and will tell us all about her upcoming YA novel But Not Forever.
More on this!
This venue has also changed. We now meet at Era Tower in Seef
Our venue for the Second Circle Poetry Group on Tuesday February 13th at the usual time of 7:30pm is the charming art gallery at Andalus Garden in Ghudaibiya, ArtDivano. This location was introduced to us by our member Claudia Hardt – thanks for all your efforts, Claudia! Our partnership with ArtDivano promises to be exciting, dynamic and poetic!
Juffair Grand Hotel
Our Creative Writers’ Workshop has a superb, quiet space at the Juffair Grand Hotel in the café on the 9th Floor. Members! Please let them know at the reception where you’re headed and we’ll see you at the cafe. Please place your orders at the restaurant below and come on up!
It’s the festive season! That means in Bahrain we have a busy social calendar right from the 1st of the month! The BWC is participating in the Island’s first Cat Festival! Titled Meow Day. Then there’s a slew of celebrations running up to Bahrain’s National Day, after which there’s Christmas. Yes! in Bahrain we say Christmas!
So, since last year we decided that it would be the perfect month to get together for a social. And that’s all we’ll be doing as the BWC. The dates will be finalised and intimated to our paid members.
But, watch this space! January it’s membership time and the kick-off to what’s already looking like a busy 2018. Do come and renew your membership, OR sign up for the first time. It’s only BD10 for the whole year with a calendar of events that will keep you writing or improve your writing or take you to the next level!
Dear members and potential members!
There were some concerns expressed with regard to our meetings this week. However, we have decided to go ahead with our Monday meeting BUT the Tuesday poetry group meeting has been postponed to next Tuesday i.e. October 18th!
Our Monday meeting speakers are two charming young authors aged 8 and 9: Phoebe Beckett-McInroy and Isabel Looby. Who are going to share their self-publishing venture with us.
Now if that isn’t inspiration, I don’t know what is!
Thank you Seumas Gallacher for introducing these two young ladies to the BWC. I look forward to a lively meeting.
Since I have not received any more entries for our last monthly challenge. I am declaring it closed. I thought I was getting one more entry, but only received two.
PLEASE NOTE OUR NEW MEETING SCHEDULE:
Monday October 10th at 7:30pm at Umami Restaurant- General/Monthly Meeting
Monday October 17th at 7:30pm at Umami Restaurant Creative Writers’ Workshop
NEW DATE FOR OCTOBER!! Tuesday October 18th at 7:30pm at Umami Restaurant – Poetry Meeting
A few years ago Chandan Sengupta decided to enter a competition that the BWC had hoped to have as a nation-wide contest open to all writers writing in English in Bahrain. The only guidelines were the story had to be based in Bahrain and under 30,000 words.
For a number of reasons that competition didn’t materialise. But it was in an attempt to have a viable entry for it, that Chandan sat down to write what eventually grew into his first full-length novel – Land of Two Seas. The book is being launched in its print edition on Friday, 19th February at 11:00 am at City Centre Mall in Bahrain. Thereafter it will be available at the bookstore’s various outlets in Bahrain.
